If You Watch This Anime Backwards...

So I've decided to discontinue doing episodic reviews every week for every episode. Rather I'll only be doing episodic review for episodes that really stood out to me (good or bad) and attempting to write editorials more often. This week's episode of Uchouten Kazoku was really quite good, but I don't have much to say about it other than the plot reveals. Silver Spoon I plan on reviewing both episodes six and seven in one go. Free kinda shot itself in the foot and I'll write another analytical sort of thing for Sunday Without Godwhen a few more episodes air.

But you know those "if you watch X it becomes Y" jokes? Well, I was bored and decided to compile a short list of some that came off the top of my head, crap or not.

BLOG -- Fan Expo Canada 2013

*Sniffle* I'm soooo sad... not just because I want Fan Expo to come back... but because I somehow lost all my blogging progress about Fan Expo... I woke up at 6 AM yesterday, determined to finish my blog. All I did was press "Enter" to create a new blank line... then I pressed "Backspace", and it erased my entire blog... I pressed the "undo" button as far as I could, but to no avail. I exited the page, hoping that it didn't automatically save, but it did... ... I only had Sunday left to cover and I would have been done!! Now I have to start over. You have no idea how much I want to cry right now... :(

Anyway... I had a lot of fun at Fan Expo this year. I attended some really neat and useful panels, and I saw some awesome cosplay and cool promotions (I think some companies are catching on that marketing creatively is key in conventions). I also had a "one-sided convention crush" (first time!), but I'll talk about that at the end of the blog, since it's more of a personal experience than anything.

The Voices Inside My Head

This is the blog entry where I talk about fictional characters who either have no voice or don't have just one voice, and name the definitive voices I hear for them in my head.

Let's start with comic book characters:

Top Thirty Anime Villans

Last year I made a list of my . I have now decided to do a list of my Top Thirty Anime Villains: the villains from Japanese animation whom I consider the best of the best. Before it starts, I'll mention the villains who were in the running but couldn't make it on, and why.

THE CONTENDERS: Prince Sincline from "Go-Lion", who, unlike his US counterpart Prince Lotor the royal dolt, was one of the earliest examples of a compelling villain in anime. He didn't make it on because he was ultimately overshadowed by all the competition in my favor. Naraku and Sesshomaru from "InuYasha": they were both excellent villains at first but then Naraku refused to die and just kept getting less and less impressive, while Sesshomaru became a bland anti-hero. Obviously, neither of them could make the cut. Orochimaru from "Naruto": what's funny is that he's actually a fairly average villain rather than a great one. Gaara was a better villain than he was! He really comes off as nothing more than Ninja Voldemort. He was only in the running because damn if he doesn't somehow have one of the coolest theme musics ever given to an anime villain. It's far more epic than he deserved! Sosuke Aizen from "Bleach": I'm sure you all know why he didn't make the list. When he first outed himself as the villain, he was hailed as one of the best manga/anime villains in years for it. But that praise was too soon, for he devolved into a bland, nonsensically written Villain Sue afterwards, and is now seen as one of the worst villains out there. Shameful of you, Tite Kubo. Shameful. And last there's Ladd Russo from "Baccanno!" While I really enjoy the character and he's one of the best things about that series, he just comes off as a dumb thug and supporting bad guy rather than a major villain. This list is for BIG villains only. So without further delay, here we go through the list!

30: GANKUTSUOU (GANKUTSUOU: THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO) - This evil alien parasite is the living embodiment of hatred, spite, and the desire for vengeance. It's name translates to "master of the cave", signifying where Edmund Dantes discovered it, and it's been consuming his life and his being ever since. As the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmund does everything in the name of taking revenge on those who wronged him, and Gankutsuou feeds off of those vengeful feelings, in turn driving the Count to more insane and villainous behavior. It's a relationship where the evil entity thrives while the host suffers. Yet it's hard to shake off, because the wants of the host are too strong, and the alien is what fulfills them. It, combined with it's vampiric host, was a great villain.

It's just like meth

but I recommend trying it at least once.

Well I'm in over my head again. Anime and kpop is a slippery slope for me. I used to watch Miyazaki, Naruto, Death Note, Gurren Lagann, and others. I listened to all the K and J pop I could get my hands on, but I took a break. I watched the first episodes of Darker than Black, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop and just didn't get my usual high. I've spent over a year without indulging in any Asian pop cultures. Then I spent an hour in Barnes n Nobel and read the first Manga of Tiger and Bunny and was in again. The next day I watched all of FLCL in one go. I have Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood queued up next. I've been listening to SNSD, 4NE1, and T-ARA all day. There is something uniquely special about other cultures. I know some people love French cooking and film or Indian dress and religion. For me it's always been South Korea and Japan. There is a certain je ne sais quoi (which literally means "I don't know what") to Anime that makes it worth checking into. Americans unfamiliar with it often mistakenly think of it as a genre. Anime can be as dark or tweeny or romantic or action-packed as any live action movie in America. It's a medium we think of as being for children, but there is plenty of R and X rated Anime out there. Brutal torture, intense romance, and sinking ennui are all themes I've seen that would be too mature for children. Many series also follow a short manga(comic book) version that came first and can be as short as six 20 minute episodes. I recommend looking into it depending on your taste. I'll list some here.

Recap: Endless 8 Part 4

I can telegraph this start now. Kyon is watching a ball game he's not interested in. I've reached the halfway point of this, and the channel uploader said that we're free to skip to Part 8. I appreciate the offer, but I intend to see this through. I made it through Bakugan and Code Geass R2, I can make it through this.

It's mentioned that there are cheers on the field. When I started watching this episode; I noticed a person that didn't think this arc was as bad as people said; that they actually enjoyed seeing all the little details in each episode, despite the fact that it was the same exact outline every time. I told the person to talk to their doctor and get the dosage of whatever they're taking raised. I know I'll need to.

Lot's of CAPS LOCK

I just went for a 2 hour walk around the city in the middle of the night ...

I LOVE THIS NEW FREEDOM!

Wasted Character Design: Bakugan

Bakugan has some great designs but it doesn't go with the anime, there for its wasted design. Just look at the picture above. Wouldn't you want to see these guys get into a fight with the guys below the words. When it comes to the design of the Bakugan than hell yeah go all out, but for the humans that just give orders, why do they look so damn cool. I would love for the humans to actually have powers and go at all because of the designs they have. Especially for the dudes that have muscles. I don't see a point in giving the humans a look you would give to human that would have powers, can do martial arts, or are a swordsmen. These characters look like they could do some awesome shit like breaking mountains with one punch. And also when it comes to the villains, they talk a lot of shit just to be standing in on spot telling orders. and some of them are borderline insane. I don't like when anime like this (Bakugan, Pokemon, Yu-GiOh, Beyblade) make the characters look like they can do real physical shit but all they do is stand around and give orders. Don't get me wrong because I like these anime but fuck. The creators make me get my hopes up high when I see insane, buffed up, cool looking characters that don't do shit eventually when we see them do something. That's like having the characters of Bakuman look like Super Saiyans. If you've seen or read Bakuman then you know what I mean. If you haven't sen it then go see it because its great and its by the same guys who did Death Note but two different series in itself. Well that's all I can say for now so like, comment, and share. I'll be back on Wednesday with another session of anime girls I'd fuck. Don't miss that. Oh, if you want to talk you can comment, find me in one of the anime communities on Google+(mostly Anime Zone, Anime and Manga, and Pokemon). My twitter is @TyieheTheTyrant and have a good day and watch anime. See ya!

Breaking Bad Review: "Confessions" (Season 5 Episode 11)

For a good chunk of "Confessions," I had to wonder if Breaking Bad was entering its Death Note phase.

For those unfamiliar with the comparison, Death Note is a 12-volume Japanese comic series (manga), later adapted into a television anime and pair of live-action films, which depicts an intense battle of wits between its two central characters - brilliant teenager Light Yagami, making use of a supernatural power to kill criminals around the world, and L, the genius detective tasked with finding him - as they strategize and maneuver to discover the other's identity. The series bears little to no similarities to Breaking Bad, but when Walter White sat down in front of the camera in tonight's episode to give his 'confession' (and clearly intending to set an elaborate, crazy plan in motion in the process) I could not help but think of Death Note, and how the remote mental struggle between Light and L escalated to a point at which Light's best option was to execute the most complicated, multi-faceted gambit possible - which, like Walter White recording a confession, involved manipulating the truth and risking his image and safety all for a greater, more nefarious purpose.

Review: Death Game

DEATH GAME (15)1 Disc (Distributor: MVM Entertainment) Running time: 102 minutes approx.

With the promise of a short term but very well paying job, ten willing volunteers find themselves driven to a remote location where they learn they are to participate in a seven day psychological experiment in the guise of a detective game, with a huge cash prize awaiting the winner. They are to be secluded under surveillance in a hi-tech building, the aptly named Paranoia House, with just two rules to be adhered to: 1) No-one must leave their room after 22:00pm and 2) the game ends when either the time limit expires or there are two survivors. To oversee their movements is a ceiling mounted robot called Guard who has the power to terminate anyone who breaks the rules. The true horror of what the group have signed up for is revealed when one person is found dead the next morning.

Having dabbled in Hollywood for the past few years, the man who effectively kick-started the J-Horror movement with the seminal Ringu in 1998, Hideo Nakata, returns to his native Japan for this adaptation of the novel The Incite Mill - 7 Day Death Game by Honobu Yonezawa, (also the film's title in Japan). The genesis of the project was to mark the 50th anniversary of the Horipro management company, with the main cast all being on their books. It takes the best elements of Saw, Battle Royale and Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians (which it openly references) and sets them in a Big Brother type environment.

Death Note L Change The World

L Change The World is a spin off the Death Note Movie series and has its own book. The spinoff takes place after the Kira case when a terrorist group threatens the world by spreading a virus. I have seen both the movie and read the book.

There were some changes I was not to crazy about. In the movie L Change the World, Near is Thai, in the book , he is like his manga/anime counterpart. Near is my second favorite character, my first of course being L, I prefer he is like his manga/anime counterpart. In L Change the World, He has 23 days live, you are seeing L in his final moments.Even though it is a spinoff its still has a great story, if yourreading the book, its an incredible book, the movie itself I give a 9 out of 10. If you a fan of Death Note like I am, I would still watch it, there is something about it that makes me want to keep watching it.

2006: Welcome to the Next Level

Serdar Yegulalp, a tech journalist by day, is also the Site Guide for . He also runs his own science-fiction-and-fantasy imprint, , where he blogs about SF, movies, creativity, the complexities of self-publishing, the Sun Ra and Skinny Puppy back catalogs, and most everything else that catches his attention. He also occasionally sticks his neck out on Twitter (@).Back when I started curating , one of the first feature articles I put together was a four-parter which involved a number of anime at different "course levels." An anime that required no understanding of Japanese culture or Japan to begin with was a "100-level" anime. Another that was still easy to get into but would be best appreciated with a little foreknowledge was a "200-level" anime. A show pitched mainly for Japanese audiences, or which one wasn't likely to find accessible unless you were already steeped in the tropes and quirks of anime generally was a "300-level" anime. (I later refined the categories a little, but the basic concept remains intact.)

I now wonder if listing BLACK LAGOON as a 100-level anime was such a good idea.

Mirai Nikki

The most recent anime I've watched is Mirai Nikki, which means "future diary" in English. I can't remember where I first heard of it, but I think it was one of those suggestions down the bottom of the page when I watched Death Note. Anyway, I got the anime off my friend and I found a chance to watch it. It was...pretty amazing. I thought I wouldn't like the art style or the story... but strangely the art was tolerable and I didn't mind the story.

The plot in general is about this boy who writes a diary with his phone, and one day his phone writes his diary for him, in advance, telling him what happens into the future. He can then base his actions on known outcomes to then change that future into something that benefits him. Then it turns out that he's not the only one with a future diary, and there are 12 diary users in total. I think the selling point of the whole plot was that they diary users had to kill each other, and the last man standing gets to become the God of Time and Space.

My (Little) Japanese Side

In two hours and 40 minutes I read 1097 pages from the scanned tankobons of manga (you can find them .) I couldn't stop myself. Kuno would have forbidden it probably screaming this way.

And I think P-Chan will be one of my future self gifts. In case you were asking I'm not an otaku and neither a comics' expert. I used to read Disney comics like Mickey Mouse (involuntarily I've taken after my bro J), Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Minnie and Witch ones.. I read Peanuts for a while.. but this is my first manga. I could read Kodocha or InuYasha next.. Or Death Note, my friend A's watching the anime.

THE INDUSTRY STANDARD IS OUR FORBES

Robot Apocalypse

Friends are the best, am I right? Always looking out for you, there for you when you need them. You can count on your real friends to tell you when your pants make you look fat or your fly's undone.

My friends say things like "I was at the store the other day, and I saw this shirt, and I just knew it was perfect for you," or "I heard this song and I thought you'd love it!" Things like "I wanted to tell you about this place you'd enjoy," and "Did you like that article I sent you about giant squids?" and "I found a video that can help you with that guitar chord you were telling me about."

Taking Over the World

Inspired by Tokuchi Toua and anime badasses in the toilet? I hope it's not just me who gets inspiration in the toilet.

So I was thinking about who I'd want in a conquest to take over the world if I could only choose three generals. And I take my pick after finishing a 123 anime.

The three who have the honour of serving me are absolute geniuses and hotshots.

An Intro to Occult-driven Television and Anime

Can you tolerate the many quirks, stereotypes, conceits, and, let's be frank, the sexualization of young women in Asian animated series? If so then you may be amply rewarded by their matter-of-fact supernaturalism. The occult is EVERYWHERE in these series. It's a well-worn trope that stands nearly as tall as the monsters in Kaiju films (like Godzilla). If you want secret knowledge, forbidden spiritual powers, mystical or mythical creatures, then TV has definitely got you covered. How it all fits together? Well, I'll continue to explore that in the future here, but for now I just want to direct readers to a few worthwhile islands in this vast media ocean.

I should also note that I'm no expert on Japanese religions. I do appreciate Japan's cultural products- was the first television series that totally blew me away when I found it. As an scholar of American religion and religious theory, I'm always approaching this material for how it might be used to illustrate the way religion works. The differences between Japanese and Western products help me see how differently we treat the supernatural in our pop culture.

Death Note

DEATH NOTE AND DEATH NOTE: THE LAST NAME

RELEASE DATE - 2006

DIRECTED BY SH SUKE KANEKO

Galilei Barrasters: Yasuomi UMETSU Returns

WHAT'S THAT? WIZARDS THAT MAKE COFFEE? I'M IN!

Above is a 45 second teaser for WIZARD BARRISTERS: VALVE MAGICIAN CECIL / , which will be the director's second original project since the rather disappointing KITE LIBERATOR from 2008. All of the director's trademarks - unique and somewhat doll-like character designs, completely over the top action, cute incidental characters and a flash of nudity (hardcore or otherwise) - are in full force, and it leaves me absolutely thrilled to see Umetsu doing something that... y'know, isn't the last 20 minutes of that Dante's Inferno game tie-in trainwreck project. It's set for a 2014 release, and if this trailer is even remotely true - an action packed courtroom drama about magical shenanigans?! -I couldn't be more excited.

Psychopomps are Good for the Soul

grim reaper (Photo credit: erika.tricroche)

I mentioned the shinigami or Japanese Grim Reaper. With the few minutes I've got to post today, I thought it was worth directing readers to some excellent examples of Grim Reapers and other conveyers of the soul (psychopomps).

Putting It All To Rest: Hourou Musuko and Aoi Hana

A couple of months into my senior year, Ion about how much I despised the J.C. Staff adaptation of Takako Shimura's Aoi Hana, which made me so violently angry, I would eventually claim that I sought to smash in my computer monitor by the third episode. The comment wasn't for effect; I'm too earnest for that. I oozed similar rage in , in which I more or less asserted that I was done seeking wholesale realism in anime, which for the most part tended not to come together, anyway. However out of whack I was over the course of that godawful year, I don't apologize for the particular sentiments. Such energy wasted over clumsy banging on the table! The feelings are still ambivalent or negative, but I don't care anymore. It's no longer worth it.

Half-expected her to whip out a bokut .

Pale Cocoon

When I write about anime, what I write depends on the show. For the famous ones, like FMA or Death Note I usually don't give plot summaries or any other forms of explanation, cause chances are that you have seen them. Instead I talk about what I think of the show, try find interesting details. But when I am writing about stuff like Violence Jack I would give some actual info, like what the show is about, how good the art style and the animation is, how much blood and murder you will see on the screen etc. Because I bet most of my readers haven't seen Violence Jack. Have you? =)

But now I want to write about Pale Cocoon. And here I will do something very different. I will give you MY GUESS what the show is about. Sure, I've watched the show. It is only 30 minutes long. And yet I can only guess what was happening in that anime. Yep, that is weird.

Guilty Crown

Finished watching this anime quite a long time ago, but never had the opportunity to post a review up. No spoilers, just thoughts.

I liked the artwork. xD It was mainly refreshing for my innocent eyes. :3 There weren't a lot of fan service type of characters and I really liked that. Some of the outfits are... interesting though because it is a bit too skin tight. But I like school uniforms and that's basically what you see most of the time. :3 Only downside is that I think there was nudity at one point? Not really sure. I can't really remember. ;A;

The story was a bit confusing (for me) and it's slow. You can follow along, but you don't really understand some parts of the story until literally half way through the anime when you discover a lot of interesting facts and crazy things that just explains most things to you. Now once you reach the end... I have a lot of friends that tell me that they didn't like the ending. It really could have been better. It seems like they ended it that way just to end it. :/ The ending is way too vague and confusing. I don't even know what happened myself until I read discussions online about what others thought happened.

Future Diary First Impressions

I am taking a break my Endless 8 marathon to bring you my first impressions of Future Diary. Even though many have praised the series, it is that time again. Time to prove that I have an opinion of my own. I must warn you: my reaction is not as good as my peers, and I have often been looked at askew for going against the grain. Still, I feel I need to speak my piece, no matter what others may think.

First 5 and a half minutes, and I'm totally lost. The opening scene has this Yuki kid OD-ing on cyanide, and this Yuno girl looking him over. The theme song feels like some sort of maniacal Hans Zimmer piece, and there is an alarming amount of black, white, and red.

Maximum the Hormone

I don't really care for nu-metal bands outside of certain releases by Slipknot, Staind, System of a Down, or the early stuff by Korn. However, there is one other band that I will listen that indulges in the nu-metal sound. This band is the Japanese band Maximum the Hormone.

As with all the bands that fit this genre, I really can't listen to them for too long of a time. But Maximum the Hormone do provide enough quirkiness to keep their songs light as well as heavy. They have some serious pop elements in their music (please remember that Japanese pop is a serious earworm and it will stay in your head longer than any Lady Gaga song... don't say I didn't warn you), but they also have some hardcore moments with guttural vocals and rapping. You'll go from listening to melodic singing over something like a doo wop guitar riff to a grindcore riff (don't even know if I'm listing that genre right, but whatever) with not-so-melodic singing within the space of about fifteen seconds.

System of a Down probably comes close to being this diverse, but Serj and Daron just don't have the pipes for melodic pop singing or guttural vocals. And they don't sing in Japanese.
