Best Anime Series of 2007

After a few posts on AKB48, here it is back on an anime topic. Many people on the netsphere considers 2007 to be one of the best, if not the best years of anime. They certainly contain some of the most well-known animes, both widely and within specific anime community (Death Note, Gurren Lagann, Lucky Star, Nodame Cantabile among them). Therefore, this is the year that I am particularly interested in seeing which anime series comes out on top.Note that similar to other analyses I did recently, I am considering an anime to be of a particular year based on when it finished, thus Code Geass, Death note and Nana (all released in late 2006) are considered as 2007 anime in my book.

Autumn 2013 Anime Preview

I'm back bitches~!I have been back in the warm embrace of my PC & wonderful internet connection for three weeks now - it's been a strange experience. For a start Ireland feels bloody tiny, but the crap public transport means that I am sorely missing not having a car.I am pretty much bankrupt thanks to my trip (which was loads of fun) so had a frantic first week home of job searching.Thankfully I got a temporary 2 month contract to tide me over for a while .which meant very little time being a NEET and catching up on things.

Being the obsessive fan I am, I did manage to keep up with a choice selection of shows from the seasons I was AWOL, but still have a lengthy list of things I want to check out - will get round to them eventually. But anyhoo, you're here for the Autumn Preview, so lets get cracking! (Can't tell you how much I missed doing these things - exhausting, but satisfying~!)

Death Note: More to it than meets the eye?

Recently, there has been heavy discussion about symbolism in the stories that we have read in class. I thought this was a great opportunity to talk about symbolism in one of the most popular anime series of all time in the U.S. and Japan: Death Note.

In Death Note, there is a Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuuk who follows around the main character (Light Yagami) and gave him a Death Note (A notebook that all Shinigami have. Any human's name who is written in it dies in 40 seconds of a heart attack unless otherwise specified in the Death Note after their name.)Light Yagami is the main character and an anti-hero who has his own idea of justice by killing criminals, and later on, generally whoever stands in his way. He is careful to hide his identity, and everyone generally refers to the mysterious murderer as "Kira." L is the world's best detective and the main character who opposes Light throughout the story, by attacking him psychologically. For example, L first had a publically announced global news broadcast where he put a prisoner on Death Row with the nameplate of his name by him on the screen. He then has the criminal claim to be L and give a provoking speech that belittles "Kira." (L has yet to reveal his true identity or face to anybody at this point in the story) Light is provoked and kills him with the Death Note. L later reveals that he only broadcasted that TV program in a certain region of Japan, so he immediately finds out Kira's general location. He also figures out from this that Light/Kira needs a name and a face in order to kill. L's and Light's ideas of justice are very different.Justice has many underlying meanings. If there was a poll asking all the people on the planet "what is right and what is wrong?" the majority will probably say something similar to what is stated in the 10 Commandments. L says that Kira has a childish concept of right and wrong. (although this is primarily to provoke him)In the series, before Light has Rem (another Shinigami that Light gains control over by endangering a human that it cares about) kill L, L receives premonitions of his death in images and dreams. In the same way, Jesus prophesied that He would be betrayed and killed. Jesus also washed the feet of his disciples, including Judas, just before Judas betrayed Him. L actually washed Light's feet after their conversation in the rain about lying. Clearly, L is representative of Jesus Christ in this series.

Attack on Titan

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

Based on the popular manga series by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan is simply one of the few anime series to come out roughly every several years that rises above the mediocrity and becomes something quite memorable. Director Tetsuro Araki, who directed the prominent anime adaptations of Death Note (2006) and High School of the Dead (2010), once again ventures into dark territory with this series. In the likes of Death Note, High School of the Dead, and Code Geass (2006) before it, Attack on Titan is simply a series that is highly distinctive in terms of its premise, easing us as viewers into a world of fear, violence, terror, and even shades of darwinistic thinking. This develops the series as a very genuine and frightful look into the sociological and psychological ramifications that develop within a civilization that is on the brink of utter destruction. It is for these reasons alone that Attack on Titan is undeniably one of the best anime series to come about in quite some time.

Accel World

is an anime based on the Light Novels by Kawahara Reki, the author of , in fact, I've decided to watch this show after as much as I did. Unlike Sword Art Online, I hadn't read the books, and as such this review would be based only on the anime, and perhaps a couple of points would be drawn from SAO and other media, as usual. I also want to note that the seed of the idea I'll use in this post, of the show's protagonists as villains had been planted by , reviewing the show.

Let's begin with the show's premise, or the world it's taking place at, and how it develops it: In 2046, people can access a virtual network known as the Neurolinker via their cellphone terminals. A perpetual victim of bullying, middle school student Haruyuki spends his time absorbed in games in a corner of his local network. One day he is approached by the most famous girl in his school, Kuroyukihime (Black Snow Princess). She gives him a strange program called Brain Burst that has the power to "accelerate the world." RAW: What I have learnt from the movies

I haven't been writing much of late. Instead I have been quite demotivated, and turned my attention to my bed, movies and countless TV series. After two weeks, I realised something was wrong. My life has turned into a battle of the mind and I don't like who I am becoming.

I'm ever so uncertain how I arrived here. I have always been motivated with my store, blog and university work, but here I am faced with this feeling that I no longer am doing what I love, but rather for the sake of doing it. It's a rather difficult space to be in; call it writer's block, but I forgot how important writing is to me and acts much like my personal therapist. I sit here and reflect the cause behind my downward spiral and I am clouded by the very things I do. I suspect that I was consumed in events, renovating the website and awaiting my summer stock to the point where I lost interest in my vision and goals. Instead I retreated to the safety of my home, under a blanket; thinking things would change itself if I laid there and forgot to care about anything else.

What I have learnt from my bed in the last few weeks is mainly due to the movies I've been watching. I have noticed the countless messages which have been communicated to us and have shaped the way we both perceive and react to the world around us. In a way it has helped ignite some motivation within me to get back up on the horse.

One Piece (Uncut) Collection 3 (Episodes 54-78)

RONAN DALY SETS OFF ON AN ADVENTUROUS VOYAGE TOWARDS PART 3 (EPISODES 54 TO 78) OF ONE PIECE, THE ANIME ADAPTATION OF EIICHIRO ODA'S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED MANGA OF THE SAME NAME, THE HIGHEST SELLING MANGA SERIES IN HISTORY.

One Piece is set in a world which, for many years following the death of the pirate king Gol D . Roger, has been experiencing the "Great Pirate Era", with pirates all over the world scrambling to find Roger's treasure, the One Piece, a symbol of the pirate king and a guarantee of glory and power for anyone who finds it. As the threat of piracy grew, so too did the marine corps of the World Government, the seafaring police force and enemy to all pirates. As the story starts, a young man called Monkey D. Luffy (voiced by Dragonball Z's Mayumi Tanaka in Japanese and Fullmetal Alchemist's Colleen Clinkenbeard in English) sets out into the world, leaving behind his small island home in the East Blue ocean on a small makeshift raft, beginning his quest to become the pirate king or die trying. Through a charming combination of persistence, optimism, luck and inspiration, Luffy manages to assemble a craft and crew to tackle the ocean and its threats with.

The Beginner's Guide to Anime, No. 22

Continuing the current mecha theme, this week is all about a series in which mecha do play a part, but they only form a small section of a much bigger story.

To give the series its full title, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, began in 2006, broadcasting two series on TV spanning 50 episodes, and a series of Original Video Anime (OVA) which are currently still being made and released. The series is at times quite complicated, given that it is set in a world with an alternative history, but there are great moments too. Part of this relates to the mecha battles, but mostly it is the psychological and thriller aspect concerning its antihero-like central character, Lelouch Lamperouge.

Memory #10: Death Note

Now it's time for one of my addictions. Hold on to your seats, I have a Death Note in my hands! Well, not exactly "the" Death Note, just a volume copy. However, I have a weird connection to this manga.

So, for the ones who don't know what "Death Note" is, let me explain: it is a manga/anime (japanese comic/cartoon respectively) series that tells the story of Light Yagami finding a notebook that allows one to kill anyone whose name is written in it. Light finds the notebook after Ryuk, a Shinigami (means "God of Death" in japanese), throws it on Earth because he was bored. Light finds interest in that notebook and decides to make Earth a better place by killing criminals, ignoring the fact that he's going crazy by using it.

Gee4 23#- Queen of Hypocrites

I am not afraid to stand up and say I am possibly the biggest hypocrite on the planet. I have no shame in admitting I'm wrong- there's nothing bad about it. All it means is I'm learning to see things from other perspectives and not being judgmental. It doesn't stop me looking like a big old goofy fan girl on most days though. I can't even begin to count the amount of times I have dismissed a book, a series, a comic or anything because it's "too dark", "too cheesy" or "not my thing". They say don't judge a book by its cover but the amount of times I have glanced across the book store shelves and immediately ignored those with the boring covers. Which is totally ridiculous- some of my favorite books have covers that make watching paint dry an extreme adrenaline rush. So now I'm trying everything new all the time. There's so much stuff out there! Who cares if it's super popular (or not), if it's eastern (or western), old or new. Life is one big fruity bowl of deliciousness and every bite tastes difference. I'm a nerd of many fandoms, a woman of different interests. I refuse to force myself to only be a comic nerd, only watch American TV, never read anything that isn't supernatural romance.

So to persuade you all to take up the call of exploration with me, I've compiled a list (oh how I love lists) of the top

Ryuk

Ryuk. MiMi said this word to me and I thought she said "Puke."

Instead, he is her favorite character in the Anime series, Death Note. He is the god of death, so he's kind of evil, but he's not, he's indifferent - most of the time. He drops his Death Note in the human world, and watches the guy who picks it up and what happens to that guy. Why does he drop it? Because he's bored.

An Interview with Kate Orman: Dr Who Author, and SF writer

Kate Orman is an Australian feminist and science fiction writer. She has written a few of the more notable Virgin Doctor Who New Adventures(and was the first and only woman to do so) and some of the BBC Doctor Who Eighth Doctor Adventures. As well as loads of other things., so you can see what else she's been doing, and a list of the Who novels she's written. Also, it's a brilliant commentary on her mind, her website - she is always posting fragments of thoughts, bits from books she's reading and reactions to theories, news, sociology, anthropology etc.I can get lost there a while - and I encourage you to, as well!

I've been reviewing, in my rambly way, lots of Dr Who books over the past year. One day I reviewed one of Kate Orman's, not for the first time - but she stunned me by replying in the comments section and starting a conversation. What a nice woman!I then got a bit ambitious and big headed, and asked her for an interview she stunned me again by agreeing.I had masses and masses of nosy questions for her, and she's answered quite a lot of them here. Hope you enjoy reading the answers as much as I did.***

Fairy Tail and My Tendency to Avoid Long Series

As you know, my dear readers, I like catharsis in an anime.Somehow catharsis has come to mean a kind of purgation of feeling which is supposed to follow upon watching drama; yet, Aristotle originally meant to mean conciseness in a story, as my Greek professor in college, Dr. Joseph Garnjobst, avers. One of the surest ways for a series to lack catharsis is for it to stretch on and on.Series longer than 27 episodes usually lose focus and contain plenty of filler episodes, which cause me to become annoyed and ofttimes drop the series altogether. For example, without a friend of mine's rabid love of D. Gray Man, I probably would have been fed up with the overdramatization which occurs around episode 60 and left off there. In the case of the original Hunter x Hunter, I have less than ten episodes to go, but have somehow not found the opportunity to just sit down and finish off the show.

Review: Valvrave the Liberator (2013)

From the emotionally intense Chihayafuru S2 to the mind-blowing Attack on Titan to the happy-go-lucky Uta No Prince Magi Love 2000%, the lineup for early 2013 was well-received amongst all Otakus. With such strong favourites, what could possibly rival against these popular titles? A mecha series - believe it or not - and it's none other than Ko Matsuo's Valvrave the Liberator which sneakily declared itself as this year's unexpected dark horse contender.

Thanks to the success of mecha predecessors such as Code Geass, Gurren Lagann and Macross Frontier, many would have brushed aside Valvrave the Liberator due to the overrated status of the genre. However, the Sunrise production has proven itself to be a worthy addition to the mecha family as it surprisingly rejuvenates the genre with its bizarre style and twists.

TOP TEN...TOP TEN BOOKS I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AS A MOVIE/TV SHOW (SET IN A PERFECT WORLD...IN WHICH MOVIES DON'T BUTCHER THE BOOKS WE LOVE)

THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOSE FROM! Um um um

Anime One: Who is the most unlikeable male character in your favorite anime?

You can't always have everything in life; sometimes even in the most perfect of anime shows, with a cast of loveable characters and a great story and plot and backdrops, there is just this one male character that you can't quite like, who spoils an otherwise perfect show.

It could be that the male character has no likeable traits, and yet finds himself in a harem situation - which makes him even harder to relate to. Or it could be that the character has stunning good looks, but the personality of a brick wall. Or perhaps this guy's the detestable dirty villain who, after he's been defeated, just won't stay defeated and keeps coming back to thwart the story's progression.

50 Great Series Finales

Every great story needs a great ending. A story should not keep going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny: it has to have a stopping point. A conclusion. Even the most open-ended endings possible are acceptable if they're done right. The quality of an ending can make or break how a story is perceived and remembered. TV series' do not always tell stories. They can be episodic or plotted and serialized depending on the content. But like stories, great TV shows should have great finales. Something to really cap off the experience and prove that it was all worthwhile. So in this entry, I've selected 50 TV shows I've seen that I feel had particularly great series finales. Most of them are animated 'cause I have not caught up with all the live action TV shows of my time yet. Please keep in mind that this is for TV series', not movies, books, or video games. Those are a similar but different matter. Without further delay, I'll cover 50 great series finales of my (mostly animated) TV experience!

Winnie The Pooh And Christmas Too (The New Adventures Of Pooh) - This show did the whole "ending on a Christmas special" thing better than "The Care Bears Family" did. This actually feels like a special episode of the series and was a worthy cap-off to a fun show.

"A BRAVE NEW WORLD FOR THE DEATH NOTES"

Otaking 4 Shingeki No Kyoujin

Believe it! It's Attack on Titan! The holy grail! For me, it's the return of my youth when I used to watch all the good shows during the 90's Toonami on Cartoon Network with Dragonball Z, G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, and everything else in between. This show speaks for itself. If there was any anime show I would recommend to ANYONE, not even someone who really likes anime, It would have to be this. It's too easy of a choice and I recommend it to anyone who has been holding out.

Even before I embarked on this epic journey I had already heard good things about the show but I was thinking to myself, man it's probably just overrated. Maybe it was something overhyped by these anxious teenage fanboys. Actually even before I started watching Vanguard I already heard praises for the show but I just dismissed it. Not until I finished My Teen RomCom Snafu with sadness In my eyes that I willingly watched the first episode...

Four hours later, I was on Episode 10...in one sitting..I was already caught up. Holy crap is this show good, I was thinking to myself after I came to a halt. Everything that I envisioned in a story, without cliches and so many unexpected moments, came from this show. Remember when I said there's always a formula on how a series is developed? Nope, not here..

Light Is Initially Skeptical Of The Notebook's Authenticity, But After Experimenting With It, He Realizes That The Death Note Is Real.

Curly hair can often trouble teens, but the preppy before the start of the series, a disaster only referred to as the "Great Catastrophe" destroyed significant parts of the world and killed off many of its inhabitants. How To Sort Out The Top TV Series?

Sorting out the list of top best TV series of all time is not a difficult task anymore. Let me help you to sort out the list of top best TV series ever. First thing you have to watch is the user ratings, plot of the story line, cast crew, creator of the series, and genre of the TV series. While selecting a TV series to add into the list, it must satisfy a major set of audiences with its best story line and dialogues.

The list of top TV series must contain the series that are most popular among the people and the one that got more awards. The directors of the TV series must use all their creativity and talents to make the TV series popular and successful among the people. Some best TV series of present include The Dexter, Game Of Thrones, Lost, Braking Bad, Walking Dead, Cosmos, The Wire, Planet Earth, Arrested Development, Twin Peaks, Firefly, Avatar The Last Air bender, Rome, Death Note, OZ, South Park, Batman, House Of Cards, and lot more.

Death Note Anime Review

Death Note Review

A shining example of anime, or rotten to the core?

Live Action Anime Movies

When it comes to manga and anime, there's a very, very, very big audience. Whether it be in Japan, America, or anywhere else around the world many people tend to fall in love with these Japanese comics and animation. And you can't really blame them. Most of these stories that are showcased through these two mediums are very good in terms of the story, artwork, animation, music, and even voice acting. There are people who know who voiced who like the back of their hand. And I don't know how many people I know that have been introduced to Japanese music via anime. The same can also be said for Japanese television and movies. So the general point I'm trying to make is that anime/manga has become a gateway of sorts for many things to come out from Japan, and is also a gateway into a world of wonderful stories. And this realm as stated has a very passionate fan base who only want to see their favorites get the publicity and recognition they deserve.

And it's this sort of thought which leads many people to want mangas and anime to be turned into live action movies. Once again, you can't really blame them. Many of the countless stories found in both anime and manga are prime for live action films. It's a topic of debate for a lot of fans on what they want to see get made, and how they'd want to see something done. And movie studios have obviously recognized this. Japan cranks out quite a few live films a year based on anime, and Hollywood has done so as well (although less successfully then Japan). So it's clear that the idea of turning these animated and drawn stories into real life people is becoming quite the norm.

Summer 2013

This week: being fanservicey but not being a fanservice anime with STELLA JOGAKUIN KOUTOUKA C3-BU, finally satisfying my curiosities in SHINGEKI NO KYOJIN, theories on why I can tolerate the melodrama in GENEI WO KAKERU TAIYOU, and a simple suggestion to make UCHOUTEN KAZOKU even better.

Defining "Otaku Pride": Apparently, You Are Not An Anime Fan Unless You Are A Loser Too

This is an autobiographical entry.

Last weekend, I went to an anime con. I did the usual: took a bunch of photos, attended a few panels, got autographs from some English voice actors. Then I went on a wild shopping spree for figurines and other useless anime-related shit.

day two

DAY TWO favorite anime you've watched so far

everyone else thinks i should be choosing death note or code geass or something huge and wow and impactful and deep but i'd really have to go with mirai nikki

DAY ONE very first anime you watched

DC Comic Adaptations on the Horizon

Not too long ago, there was a financial analyst who came out with a report that comic to film adaptations were basically a bad investment. This was, of course, before the Avengers film came out.But Marvel isn't the only one finding success in bringing comic books to life. The Walking Dead TV series is arguably one of the best shows on today. Then there's the big surprise that Arrow was picked up for another season. While Dredd didn't do so well in the theaters, if you haven't seen it already, I urge you to check it out. It's no fluke that the film garnered a 73% audience rating and a 78% critics rating on .

We've been hearing a lot of reports about a Justice League film in the works, but DC actually has a number of adaptations in pre-productionor pre-pre-production .

Where was the Dragon?

I took some days off. It is not that I was going somewhere. I just wanted to get away from something. My objective, getting as far away as I could from the computer and the Internet. I was trying to think and I found that the endless flow of information was causing a sort of "noise" in my head, loud enough to keep me from hearing myself. A warning blinked in red "Brain Overload." "Shut Down System."

Seeing me singing "I feel pretty, oh so pretty that the city should give me its key.." was not as alarming as watching me waltzing around the cave in a pink tutu and a helmet with long blonde braids attached to it. Nothing ends until the fat lady sings.

If You Are a Non-Conformist, Copy and Paste This Into Your Profile

The first time I saw Alice Dorset, she was thumping her way across the music room of our school, lugging a saxophone case bigger than she was, wearing her (knee-length) kilt hemmed so long it fell almost to her ankles, and muttering fluently to herself in what I later learned was Arabic.Insecure little middle-schooler that I was, I was naturally terrified out of my mind. Here was someone of my own age group that was so aggressively quirky that she didn't even have an L.L. Bean backpack. Not only that, but there was not a scrap of North Face anywhere on her person. As I rapidly learned, these were sins unforgivable to a certain select group of girls in our class, which made a point of ignoring her or teasing her; the rest of the grade just tried not to get involved, in case she really did bite like the rumors said.

I'd love to say that my best friend and I fell in platonic love at first sight and hit it off from the start, that we discovered we had a great deal in common in our first conversation and that night we became blood brothers. Not so.I only sought out Alice and tried to become her friend specifically because I had declared private war on that one particular select group of girls, and I figured that this was a soldier I could easily convert to my cause. To my frustration and annoyance, the quiet submissive weird Alice refused to be dominated by me, and utterly refused to become like me.I am relieved and happy to say that through nearly continuous exposure to her over the seven years of middle and high school and as many visits as we can swing while in college, I have become something like her.

Scotland Loves Animation 2013 Festival Line-Up

On the day that , I report about this year's takes place in GLASGOW (OCTOBER 11TH-13TH) and EDINBURGH (OCTOBER 14TH-20TH). If the former bit of news is sad for the loss tat the film and anime world will suffer then the line-up offers positivity because these titles have so much imagination and originality that, even with the Miyazaki-sized hole in anime, great works will still be made.

The line-up features a lot of the biggest anime films released in Japan over the last two years. There are some genuinely lovely surprises like Fuse: A Gun Girl's Detective Story, Garden of Words, and Gusko Budori and some great surprises like Hal and Patema Inverted. Some of these films already have UK distribution deals and some are classics that are getting re-released.
