Random Thought (July 28, 2013 at 09:27PM)

Random Thought 417

Birthday, holidays, vacations? Ain't nobody got time for those when you have a thesis to worry about. Still haven't decided on the best topic to design. Brain, where are you when I really need you? Good thing that the exam is moved on Tuesday, so I don't need to worry anything for tomorrow. The worst thing is that, I have to study hard for that exam since I still don't get more than 50% of the coverage.

Alternative Entertainment to 'The Wolverine'

Plans fell through to see the new X-Men movie, 'The Wolverine' starring Hugh Jackman. I felt a bit pessimistic to doing my usual original creative writing attempting to write a novel. Screenplays haven't been panning out so far. These were the television shows that I found to watch in replacement for the movie I desired to see.

What Makes a Hero and What Makes a Villain?

Recently, I was watching an anime called Vampire Knight with one of my sisters (of which I have two). It's an interesting and deeply moving story, if not slightly creepy. Two major things are going on in this story. First, there are those in the story that are trying to make it possible for humans and vampires to coexist. Second, the main character, Yuki, has her own battle to fight. Her friend, Zero, is slowly reverting into an E-level vampire after having been bitten by a Pureblood. What he is turning into is a lower class, one that eventually loses all humanity and craves only blood.

A Study on Anime-Traits in BBC Sherlock

The attempt of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat to retell the story of Sherlock Holmes in modern-day London turned out to be a tremendous success, so tremendous indeed that the series gained popularity all over the world and the hype didn't leave Japan out. On the contrary, a manga series was announced on October 4, 2012 covering the first case "A Study in Pink". Personally, I'm not an expert when it comes to western TV-Series, but as an Anime-addict, I noticed some traits in BBC Sherlock many fellow Otakus are quite familiar with. (I don't think that the series is in any way inspired by the Anime I'll mention later on, yet I found the similarities worthwhile enough to appreciate in this article.)

First: Take a look at some characters and you notice the use of trademarks, for example, Mycroft's umbrella. It is not a rare case to see Anime-Characters that are defined by a certain trademark, a catchphrase ("You see, but you do not observe") or a pose and it is the same in Sherlock. There is, for example, Mycroft's female assistant who is glued on her smart phone almost for her whole screen time. She is no three-dimensional character since her whole character is defined by her smart phone-affinity. Of course, this doesn't apply to Mycroft's penchant for umbrellas. Yet, he is also more of a two- than a three-dimensional character. As Sherlock describes him, "he (Mycroft) practically is the British Government". This means, Mycroft is the representation of governmental authority, the incarnation of the concept of power. Similar characters can be found in Mohiro Kitohs terrific manga "Narutaru" where Naozumi Sudo is the embodiment of nihilism whereas Takeo Tsurumaru represents chaos. One could criticize those characters for being unrealistic, but on the other hand, this is exactly what gives them their iconic value.

The previous description applies to another character, the criminal mastermind, Jim Moriarty. Sherlock once calls him a "spider" in the web of crime. He is able to manipulate it at his will, making him the most dangerous of all criminals. Sounds familiar. In Naoki Urasawa's manga "Monster", the angel-faced psychopath Johan Liebert is the mastermind behind an invisible web of crime that he solely holds in his hands. His character and his objective might differ from Moriarty, but the idea of an invisible web of organized crime created and manipulated by an embodiment of absolute evil is present in both works.

Death Note's Tatsuya Fujiwara is Shishio Makoto in "Rurouni Kenshin"

Jump SQ announced that Tatsuya Fujiwara (Death Note's Light Yagami) had been confirmed to play as the powerful Shishio Makoto in the two upcoming RUROUNI KENSHIN live action films. Directed by Keishitomo (Ry maden), it will premiere on Summer 2014.

The two films will be entitled "RUROUNI KENSHIN: THE GREAT KYOTO FIRE ARC" and "RUROUNI KENSHIN: THE END OF A LEGEND ARC". TAKERU SATO (Kamen Rider Den-O) will be reprising his role from the first film as Kenshin Himura.

RUROUNI KENSHIN LIVE ACTION 2

Perhaps one of the biggest summer blockbuster in Japan, nopossibly the World last year: RUROUNI KENSHIN LIVE ACTION, featuring SATOH TAKERU as the former Battosai, is now due for a sequel! The latest buzz is about his next opponent, MAKOTO SHISHIO, an assassin played by FUJIWARA TATSUYA. Who's FUJIWARA TATSUYA you ask? He's the actor who played YAGAMI LIGHT from Death Note Live Action (which by the waywas a very awesome Live Action interpretation of the hit Anime/Manga series!). Can't say I am a fan of his work but seeing Fujiwara's face again filled me with glee. He played a pretty awesome Light so I have no doubt he will do this villian's roleJUSTICE. See what I did there? Last summer, I was also filled with glee when I heard Satoh was playing Kenshin. I loved him in BECK LIVE ACTION, sans him not actually singing.

What is the best part about being a kid?!

Back in the days, I was a huge fan of mangas! 10 years ago I just stopped watching them all together. I don't know why and how that happened but it just did. I was watching Naruto and Bleach from episode one, every week and one day *PUFF* no more. 2 days ago I was thinking that there are a couple of anime that I would like to see. Death Note and Detective Conan came to mind. Yes i know, I am old and bla bla bla... Oh well. Everyone is as old as they think they are, right?! I have been on intensive treatment of Death Note, I have watched 20 episodes between yesterday and today.

And yes as usual, being the hopeless romantic that I am, I ended up thinking about the love(?) between Light and Misa. I have to say that I have not finished the whole series so I dont know how things will end up between them but ... I LOVE MISA! Yes one could argue that I fall in love quite easily and that is kind of true... but i love certain aspect of people. I love how Misa is committed to Light even tho he made it quite clear that he didn't want to be with her. She just knows that he is the love of her life.

Seirei no Moribito: I Really Wanted to Like it

I have watched a ton of fantasy shows. By a ton I mean that the vast majority of the shows I've watched have been fantasy or contained fantastical elements. Seirei no Moribito promised to be another good fantasy show and even though I've been getting a little sick of the genre I decided I would go ahead and watch it anyway. I mean it got good reviews on MAL () and it was written by Uehashi Nahoko who wrote one of my favorite shows: Kemono no Souja Erin. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. At this point, I'm not sure if it's because I'm jaded or if it's because the show is legitimately boring, but I couldn't get into it. I dropped it after 5 episodes so I'm not going to be able to account for the entire show, but I'll comment on the bit of it that I watched. (This is probably going to be a very short post that doesn't include any pictures of some weird half-naked, purple-haired girl posing in her underwear. Sorry otaku.)

I couldn't even find any interesting pictures.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

I have a question for you:

What if a great anime suddenly got a sequel after 4 years. What then?

Seiyuus

Here are some more seiyuus for you. From now on I'll try to add more seiyuus with a common theme in them, you'll be able to see so from the title. Though this batch of picks were rather random in my opinion...

ANIME MUSTS!

These are the few animes that you just have to watch!1. Steins GateSummary:- Steins;Gate is about a group of friends who have customized their microwave into a device that can send text messages to the past. As they perform different experiments, an organization named SERN, who has been doing their own research on time travel, tracks them down and now the characters have to find a way to avoid being captured by them.Read more at

If you are a ardent anime fan then you must have at the very least heard of Steins Gate. If you haven't then you need to watch STAT!! There are only a few animes that i truly enjoy and love and Steins Gate is one of them.It has everything any anime fan could ask for nice art, interesting and non cliched characters, truly funny punch lines and of course, THE MOST engaging, exciting, heart wrenching, mind boggling storyline of all time!! Normally most animes would have your classic fan service but not Steins Gate. The other amazing thing about Steins Gate is that even though the hero isn't your usual super good looking hero, the more you watch, the more you get to like him and honestly admire him. Basically i don't think i will find another anime that can rival Steins Gate anytime in the near future. STEINS GATE EARNS INFINITE STARS FROM ME.

2. Ano hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai(a.k.a Ano Hana)Jinta Yadomi and his group of childhood friends have become estranged after a tragic accident split them apart. Now in their high school years, a sudden surprise forces each of them to confront their guilt over what happened that day and come to terms with the ghosts of their past. Read more at

Weekly Ramblings 1

Hey there folks! Today I will be introducing the first installment of my Weekly Ramblings posts. The goal here is that I just sit down for 15 minutes at the end of the week and write down whatever comes to mind. So without further a-do, here we go!

So Microsoft has just (well sort of) announced that it will no longer be imposing the draconian regulations it had previously meant to use for the upcoming Xbox One console. Namely: You will no longer need to connect to the internet once ever 24 hours in order to play, and you will nowbe able to trade used games as normal. While I welcome the news I can't help but be skeptical about Microsoft's change of heart. Multiple times during E3 that stated that they were standing behind their policies and that anyone who disagreed should, for lack of a better term, stuff off. The only reason they've made the change is for business reasons, not because they genuinely believe they were wrong, so I really hope that people don't forgive Microsoft too easily I know I haven't.

Show Us Your Moves Submission: Miranda cosplays as Chibitalia!

Miranda sent us a submission of her cosplay from ! She utilized our to finish off the look that she needed for this costume. Check out pictures and her awesome story below! - What got you into cosplay?

I think I was browsing the Internet, looking for Death Note fan-art. I kept stumbling across photos of people dressed up in costumes to resemble the characters. At the time, I had no idea what cosplay was, so I was intrigued by all of those pictures. I ended up doing some research, and discovered cosplay. " How long have you been cosplaying?

I was a junior in high school when I cosplayed for the first time (I somewhat cringe, since my first cosplay was a badly done L cosplay), so I think it's been at least five years. I was mainly only piecing together cosplays with things I had in my room. It wasn't until Anime Central 2010 that I actually bought a wig and altered a bathrobe to put together an Edward Elric cosplay. " Were there any particular reasons you selected this character?

Gatchaman Crowds

Was curious about new anime so watched its first episode, alas must admit that this series is definitely not for me.

Apparently based on a television series from the early seventies, the anime itself has plenty of merit and studio Tatsunoko Production seems to have some experience in bringing old franchises back, like "Casshern Sins".

Review

This review was originally written on March 20, 2009.

Batman: Gotham Knight is an animated film comprised of six vignettes meant to bridge the gap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Each vignette tells an independent aspect of the overall story: Batman's battle with the mobs in Gotham City, as well as various villains from the Batman universe. This movie is very similar to what was done for The Animatrix. Each of the short stories in the film is animated by a different Japanese anime studio.

Free! Episode 01

So you might have noticed by the title that I'm starting up a new show. If you haven't, then you probably noticed just now. Unless you skipped the last two sentences, in which case, I can't help you.

I was sitting around, and then my girlfriend comes up and says, "hey, there's this show that really confuses the hell out of me, maybe you should do something about it." And I, being the complete idiot I am, go "sure, what could possibly go wrong?"

Death Note

Well, seeing how things on the anime community have been slow lately, other than episodes of Attack on Titan, which I will not review until the series is complete, so I can give my full opinion of the show overall. Instead, I've decided to take a look back at one of the shows that had a huge hype, and was one of the most complex, intelligent, and interesting shows of 2006-2007. I'm talking about Death Note, for those of you who don't read titles. This really isn't going to be so much a review as it is a recognition of how great this show was. This is by far one of the darkest and most complex animes I've seen.

THE PLOT: A grim reaper named Ryuk is bored with his own world, the Shinigami Realm, and decides to drop his tool of killing, a "Death Note" into the human world. The Death Note is a notebook that, when a person's name is written in its pages, they die. This notebook shortly discovered by Light Yagami, a high school student who thinks that the world has become corrupt, and decides to utilize the notebook as a tool to purge the world of all crime. The only person who can stand in Light's way is a secret super-detective named "L."

Recap: Beauty and the Beach

Hello again. By the time you read this, I will have returned from my father's. I had intended to write this recap during the time I was there, but I ended up spending more timewith my father at his request. Apart from that, it is now summertime. Just as well, it's time tohit the beach and cover another episode of Pok mon, but this episode is a little bit different.

One of the things I wanted to do when I started this blog was to cover the banned episodes of Pok mon. Ones that were blacklisted from viewing in the US and subsequentlynever got a proper home video or DVD release. I will be discussing the reasons why theywere banned, as well as the reasons why they will not be getting official releases in our lifetime.

The first of these episodes is "Beauty and the Beach". While it was just another episodein Japan, in the US, it was deemed offensive enough that its intended initial airing was skipped. It later aired in 2000 as a "lost episode" with the offending material trimmed out. To this day,it has only been rerun once and most of the official materials in the US try to pretend it neverhappened.

Posts and Their Length

So bright...

This is a short post I'll make on my post lengths.

Your Monthly Awesome: May 2013

Wow guys, I'm so sorry. Sure, I doubt there is really that many of you who loyally follow this blog (assuming anyone does) but if even one person has been annoyed by my lacking of Your Monthly Awesome: April it is completely my fault. I've been totally absorbed in Kingdom Hearts 2. Also, I went and saw Iron Man 3 without posting a review. I'll need to rectify that soon. Whatever. Moving on, here are your monthly recommendations.Anime/Manga: Death Note "I Am Justice."Light Yagami is a genius Japanese high school student who believes he's bored with life. Little does he know, in another world one of many death gods, or Shimigamis, is experiencing a boredom he couldn't possibly comprehend. To alleviate the dullness of both lives, said Shimigami secretly gifts Light with a "Death Note," a notebook which kills the owner of any name written within it. With little to work with beyond enclosed instructions and his owns wits, Light renames himself "Kira" and begins murdering criminals world round in hopes of creating a perfect world. This holocaust soon attracts the interest of the police, and soon after that of "L," a mysterious detective who only takes cases he finds personally interesting and always gets his man. And so these two great intellects do battle, both hoping to create a better world in the process. Why does this story hold so much appeal, that it has been transformed into its own trilogy of live-action films(which I have yet to see)? Haven't we sometimes wished we could unacceptably kill someone the world would be better off without? You'd probably be a liar if you claimed other wise. That said I'd like to make it clear this is NOT a revenge story. It is about ideals and delusions. Which is just the reason I and so many other fans were enraged when it came to light (ha, punny) that the forthcoming American version would not only cast Zac Efron in the lead role, but change his motivation into killing those who had wronged him. The best analogy I can think of here would be if the Evangelions were changed into straight-up mechas and the pilots were aged up into their late twenties early thirties. Thankfully I haven't heard anything about that project lately and it may have gone to the way side. Now Characters: This world is Rotten. Rotten people should be killed off to cleanse this world.LIGHT YAGAMI: Our "hero." Upon discovering the Death Note, this brilliant youth seeks to make him self the God of a New World by killing off those who don't deserve to live. While his forethought and ridiculous gambits are normally enough to keep him safe, two big obstacles do get in his way. One: his father is not only the local police chief, but is in charge of the local team assigned to capture Kira. Two: "L," the brilliant detective described below, may actually be better at this than he is. Can this boy succeed in his quest, and do we want him to? Kira is childish and he hates losingI'm also childish and hate losing.L: The aforementioned World's-Gretest-Detective, L has some... excentricies that don't exactly come to light (ha, there we go again!) until you meet the guy. He's constantly hunched over, never sleeps, eat several times his own weight in sweets (without any other form of sustenance), and only fights with his feet on the rare occasions he does fight. Really he's an exaggerated version of me, except for the smart part. His reputation doesn't lie, and L really is the only person with a snowball's chance in hell of beating Kira. Especially since know one knows his name, Light can't scribble him out like everyone else. Will he succeed in making the world safe for justice(and cake)? Humans are so... interesting.RYUK: The Shimigami who provides the nominal MacGuffin, this character spends most of the anime following Light (or whoever happens to hold the Death Note at the moment) around and begging for apples. Once he lived in the Death World and spent his time like all of his brethren, watching humans from afar and killing them before their natural due date so as to add the remainder of their lives onto his own. Unlike the others, this bored him to tears and caused him to make all kinds of mischief. Fianlly fed up with it all, he dropped a Death Note onto a school lawn in hopes of setting off something entertaining to watch. As many of you will hopefully come to agree, he succeeds. (Tragically, he is rather over looked in the shows second act, one of my only major complaints.) I can't go on in a world without Light.MISA: Light's stalker, basically. She holds a special place in her heart for Kira for killing her parent's murderer and special place in her heart for Light because... I really don't know. Regardless, she seems like a really nice girl, though she is most assuredly mentally unstable. Being rich and famous she may have become a Japanese super star if she didn't fall in love with a sociopath. This pawn has a hard path ahead of her, that's all I'm saying.Well, since the only other characters who I can think to add would provide massive spoilers, I guess you'll just have to go see the rest yourselves. Thank me later!Live-Action Television: Dollhouse You ever try to clean an actual slate? You always see what was on it before.Joss Whedon may be one of the greatest directors of our time. Thus its no surprise this particular is amazing. What is shocking is how good it is even by his standards. Personally, I think it far out ranks Firefly, Serenity, and even Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Unfortunately, it got horrible ratings and marks a low point in his career only recently repaired by Marvel/Disney. Thankfully, Fox had been so badly burned by its cancellation of the previously mentioned sci-fi show it allowed this show to reach its conclusion with a second season. The basic premise is as follows: The "Dollhouse" is an underground human trafficking ring (or perhaps "human rental ring") that provides high class clients with Dolls, beautiful human beings who are routinely mind wiped and given specific memories and skills for each job. Other than the "obvious" use, Dolls are used as spies, bodyguards, and safe crackers. Recently, an extremely powerful Doll who had accidentally managed to store up the personalities they had loaned him escaped custody and went on a homicidal rampage. Now on high alert, the Dollhouse finds itself dealing with enemies from within and out. Most notable among these threats are Echo (the main character and the company's most requested Doll who begun to retain memories and my be in danger of going Alpha), Paul Ballard (an FBI agent who has taken an interest in the "Dollhouse" rumors and is relentlessly pursuing answers), continuous pressure from beyond the L.A. branch to "enhance their service," and of course the possibility of Alpha's return. To combat these and other threats are the L.A. branch's skilled employees: Adelle DeWitt, the leader, Boyd Layton, Echo's newly hired handler, Dr. Claire Saunders, the physician played by Angel's Fred, and Topher Brink, the skilled scientist who acts as though someone put Willow and Xander in a blender and some may recognize from Cabin in the Woods. All in all, if you have enjoyed anything from Joss Whedon, from his urban fantasy Buffy-verse to his Marvel Team-Up cinematic master piece, please watch this show. Its on Netflix.Film: Jack the Giant Slayer I may not be the hero of this story, but at least I get to see how it ends.Fairy tale stories are really in the vogue these days. In between Tim Burton's Alice in the Wonderland remake, Once Upon a Time, and Grimm the market's near over saturated. Good thing so much of it is good. Bryan Singer's new work is no exception. Rather than take the "modernization" idea many of its brethren have gone with, this film takes place within its original era. Jack is an extremely intelligent peasant boy who, after providing a renegade princess with shelter, has his cottage whisked into the sky by magical forces which have passed into lore. Accompanying a party of knights and the princess's antagonistic suitor, Jack searches for his true love while going up against a steady stream of villains who continually replace each other as the story continues. Definitely makes up for Superman Returns.Western Animation: Superman vs. The EliteSpeaking of the Man of Steel, many of you may have noticed how amazing DC's animation department has become. Well, this film is no exception. Based on What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?, Supes finds himself pitted against the largest threat to both his survival and his ideology: Cynicism. The Dream is Over! Viva Reality! In a modern world, aged super heroics just don't cut it with the people anymore. They want someone will bring the supervillians to an end, who will avenge their casualties and end their wars. And Clark's just not that guy. Unfortunately his new "Sidekicks," the said Elite, very much are. Lead by a limey telekinetic, this quartet of antiheroes straight from the nineties are here to usher in a new age, and they'd really like to bring their number one boy scout with them. He is less than enthused, thus the point of contention. As things go further off the rails, the Elite grow stronger and Superman begins questioning his moral bias. What is the world without someone who will do anything to defend it? This is Canon Fodder King, signing out.

[RANDOM][ANIME] The Warping Penguin's Top 5 Anime Openings

I've been thinking lately, about my favourite opening songs in anime.I don't personally watch and listen to anime openings, because I'd rather watch the anime straight away, so I'd usually just skip it.

However, there are some times where the anime opening is just so overly awesome, that I just getawestruck the first time I'd hear it.Either it's because the opening song goes visually well with the opening scenes, or that the opening song is just so upbeat and catchy that I grew into liking it.

The following I guess, are my top 5 anime theme songs from a variety of anime titles I have seen.I guess these opening songs would "indicate" the type of Japanese music I'd like to listen to in my free time :)

An Okay Way to Spend an Evening

So recently I've been spending a lot of time watching anime series. For the longest time I was against it. Why? I really have no idea. Until college I had seen a little Gundam through my siblings and some Pokemon when my parents weren't home. I got to college and that quickly changed.

My room mate at my first college was appalled that I had never seen any anime. So I decided to humor him and watch one. I selected Gundam SEED because I was familiar with Gundam and SEED itself was touted as one of the best by many. I watched SEED and SEED Destiny in two weeks. I was hooked. I watched mostly Gundam at first, but expanded my horizons over time.

Anime Expo!

So here I am guys! I've made the full journey from being a hater to actually cosplaying at an expo(mah dream for a couple months.

My costume(Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji I did get some compliments and waves and some people even asked to take my picture which made me really happy. I got a lot more attention outside of the con hall, like in hotel lobbies and stuff though XD.

An Opinion: Walk on In

While I know that it's from the anime (obvious), it's the closest thing to what we have to the love triangle in the fanfic (the boys in love with each other albeit they are oblivious to love LITERALLY and Shirley to Lelouch and she doesn't know about the recent addition to the Lamperouge household.)

Let me just give you a brief review of Code Geass as a whole (yes, that includes R2): It's good but not great. The melodrama didn't flow well (much like Death Note) in my opinion and sometimes very contrived. The series is as subtle as an elephant dancing ballet to Swan Lake, wearing a tutu. They had some very interesting ideas that carried through. While the politics in the series can be a bit stuffy (a very nationalistic show), it's an alternate universe that they took good use of. It's very hammy and very hopeful which is the point that contrasts it from Death Note. This also carries through to the spin-offs.

- Watching new anime

It's been ages updating this blog, due to the final exams I wrote about last time and also due to a lot of catching up with friends and relatives. My younger brother finished and passed his highschool finals last week so we had to throw a party also, holidays are coming up pretty soon and I've been making plans with friends and family.

As for today's conent. I haven't been adding too much new material to my Kanji Decks but I have been watching a ton of anime and reading some manga. I normally use animefreak.tv but since Im quite the graphics-admirer I started downloading HQ versions. As for Manga, the sites I use for raw downloads areor . Unfortunately, getting to the download link is quite a hassle but the database is vast and overall good quality scans. Worth checking out. Last week I added some anime to my collection:

Tatsuya Fujiwara joins new Rurouni Kenshin live-action film cast; other details revealed

Yep, lots of news.

TATSUYA FUJIWARA CAST AS SHISHIO; DIRECTOR KEISHI OTOMO TO RETURN

What is this... Favorite Anime? REVISITED

Back in October 2011, . At the time, I had a somewhat limited watch history and, to be honest, I hadn't quite thought some of them through. I figure it's about time I fix that. This time around I'm going to do it by genre instead of just naming a bunch of the same genre and copping out on the others. Variety is the spice of life, you know?

THE REQUIREMENTS: According to my friends, I have some very high standards when it comes to animated shows, and I can't really dispute that. I do have high standards for shows because I've seen so many incredible shows and can't tolerate anything less. Most of these will meet every requirement, but some might not. Some are non-negotiable, like a decent story and likable characters, while others, like animation and music, are important but won't completely ruin an anime if they aren't superb. "Graphics aren't everything" we gamers like to say...

JOHAN/LIGHT:WHO STANDS AS THE GREATER EVIL?

This is both an interesting and disturbing question to ask, in trying to consider which of these two anime/manga characters is the greater evil. Murderous intent and nature isn't something to be intrigued by, at least in real life human beings. Not many people would be interested in asking which of the two, Hitler and Bin Laden, is the greater evil. But when it comes to anime and manga there is a place for being intrigued by and even admiring the evil acts of fictional characters, because this is one of anime and manga's most significant traits; its ability to make any subject, no matter how benign or dark, interesting and exciting.

Maybe its because we know that what we are watching is not real (and even if it was, it would be happening in Japan, far far away) or because anime character are designed to execute each and every act, no matter how gruesome with a great sense of flare and showmanship. The point is their is a place for appreciating just how well an fictional characters carries out his fictional actions, even if those actions are down right evil and loathsome.

Why Can't We Hate Light Yagami? Why Do We Venerate L?: An Analysis of the Main "Prantagonists" in Death Note

In this post I'm going to focus in on what I like to call, "prantagonists". The more legitimate term is "anti-hero", but I prefer prantagonist so that's what I'll be using for the remainder of the post. (On a side note, I haven't read the manga, seen the movie(s), or read the book(s), so this post is entirely based on the anime adaptation of Death Note.) The two characters I'll be focusing on the most are Light Yagami (Kira) and L because I think they best exemplify the concept of "prantagonists" within the show. And not to mention, I think that many people really underestimate the similarities between the two of them, even though they seem to be on two different ends of the morality spectrum.

Top 10 Anime You Should Watch

I come from a time when anime was actually foreign and mysterious. The only way we could ever see it, without buying it, was to enter Blockbuster's special interest section and convince your parents it wasn't some weird type of pornography. Although, sometimes it was! Anyways, this is my top 10 list of some of the best anime ever, in no particular order.

Death Note

The Death Note anime, directed by TetsurAraki and animated by Madhouse, began airing in Japan on October 3, 2006, and finished its run on June 26, 2007, totaling 37 twenty-minute episodes. It begins in the year 2006, instead of 2003. The series aired on the Nippon Television network "every Tuesday at 24:56". The series was co-produced by Madhouse, Nippon Television, Shueisha, D.N. Dream Partners and VAP.

In North America, the series has been licensed by Viz for residents in the United States to use "Download-to-Own" and "Download-to-Rent" services while it was still airing in Japan. This move is seen as "significant because it marks the first time a well known Japanese anime property will be made legally available to domestic audiences for download to own while the title still airs on Japanese television". The downloadable episodes contain the original Japanese audio track and English subtitles, and is available through IGN's Windows-only Direct2Drive service. DVDs of the series are also being released,[44] containing both an English dubbed audio track, produced by The Ocean Group, and the original Japanese audio track with optional English subtitles. Viz announced at Anime Expo 2007 that the first DVD was officially released on November 20, 2007, in both regular and special editions, and also confirmed at Comic-Con International 2007 that the first 15,000 copies of each DVD contains collectible figures.

Why Death Note Is Confusing

If you're like me (and I really don't suspect that you are), you've come across a discussion about Death Note, the manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata or its anime adaptation, at some point in your life.

But before I advance with this post, I want to warn you: Spoilers abound! Potentially up to volume 10.
